Landowners & Large-Scale Solar in California

About this

Study

To reduce the negative effects of climate change, we need to create more renewable energy, especially Utility-Scale Solar Energy (USEE). However, many planned utility-scale solar projects target farms and ranches. This study looks at the issue by talking to 60 people involved in farming, solar energy, and community and government organizations in California's San Joaquin Valley and San Francisco Bay Area.  The study finds that landowners decide to host USSE based on factors like making money, having enough water, caring about the environment and preserving farmland, and wanting to maintain their lifestyles.  Farmers and ranchers have different priorities, with farmers trying to make money while still farming, and ranchers caring more about the appearance of their land. We found that it's not easy to combine solar energy with farming, but there are some areas that could work well in the future.
